We all know someone who has been sexually assaulted, it may have even happened to you.
Nova Scotia has one of the worst sexual crime rates in all of Canada, HRM statistics are even worse.
Because you love her, take a stand, it’ll only take two minutes.

Dear Elected Representative,
Our province is in crisis. According to available statistics (http://avaloncentre.ca/resources/statistics/) Nova Scotia has among the highest sexual crime rates in all of Canada. (*In 2007, the rate of reported sexual assaults in Nova Scotia was 75 per 100,000 people compared to the national rate of 65 per 100,000 people.)
Despite these alarming facts, our governments are doing little to acknowledge or address this issue. In HRM alone, one woman per day reports sexual violence. It is estimated that of every ten sexual assaults, only one victim comes forward to police.
We cannot celebrate $900 000 in one-time emergency funding for VICTIM services as the answer to this life destroying problem. This does nothing to PREVENT sexual violence.
We demand change. We can start here.
1. Include sexual assault awareness and prevention education as part of the Department of Education curriculum in our schools across the province. Depending on community organizations, who depend on you for their existence and operation to provide this education, is obviously not enough.
2. Require sexual assault prevention training for bar and security staff. These individuals are often ‘first responders,’ and it is prudent to have interventions available in situations where we are most likely to need them. (http://dalgazette.com/news/campus/behind-the-dark-curtain/).
HRM’s sexual crime rate is even higher than the provincial average. (*The rate of police-reported sexual assault in HRM in 2007 was 87 per 100,000 people compared to the provincial rate of 75 per 100,000 people). We are a university city, with the second highest bars-per-capita ratio in Canada.
It is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. We are in crisis every day. Make Nova Scotia safer.
