Canwest

My first Canwest photo was published today in the National Post. A bit of a 'pick me up' after the sad news about the Halifax Daily News. I traveled to Bridgewater for this assignment with reporter Robyn Young. We went down in a snow storm and what should have been an hour drive from Halifax took almost two. Once there the vigil was under way and we had to get what we needed fast. The only other media people there were a couple students from King's (good on them). We headed over to where a body was found but it didn't check out as anything worthy and the RCMP were there keeping people out. Another two hour drive back to the city and we filed what was to be the final news/photo assignment for the Halifax Daily News after all those years in operation.

Halifax Daily News

This morning I was watching the CBC news at about 11 a.m. when it was announced that Transcontinental was closing the Halifax Daily News. About ten minutes after this my good friend and chief photographer Andre Forget called to pass on the sad news. I've meet some truly wonderful and professional people during my short year and a half there and I will miss working with them all.

The Halifax Chronicle-Herald ran the story here and King's Journalism Review has an online broadcast here and here.

African Heritage Month

The 24th year of African Heritage Month launched in Nova Scotia today with the unveiling of the official poster and announcement of events across the province. This video is from events that took place at the Halifax North Memorial Library opening ceremony for African Heritage Month 2008. In hindsight it would have been nice to see some crowd shots.
