The past week has been a great experience. We started off filming speakers during the Africville Meet and Greet and ended today (for me at least) filming poets and kids launching an replica Africville fishing boat. Some learning curves included ways to get around background noise, especially from generators, lighting without power, and interview techniques (very difficult in uncontrolled situations). I have about six hours of tape for Mark Carvery including some 'B' Roll.
Saturday, July 19, 2008Africville 25th Reunion![]() This year marks a special moment in the histroy of Africville. Africville was a small community located on the southern shore of Bedford Basin, in the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. During the 1960's the City of Halifax began to encroach on the southern shores of Bedford Basin and the community and its dwellings were ordered destroyed while the residents were evicted. Some were evicted in dump trucks. Mark Carvery of Carvery's Video Enterprises is doing a documentary film to commemorate the 25th time former residents of Africville and their families and friends join in remembrance of Africville through song, dance, story telling, and prayer. I'm working with him as a camera operator and gaffer. I'm also going to shoot some still of the making of this documentary. That's Mark in the photo. This project will be updated on my projects page. Tuesday, July 15, 2008Deep Sea Equipment![]() Deep Sea Equipment is an under sea exploration company based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. They use Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to provide survey's and video. I will be documenting them through photographs and videos as well as piloting the ROVs from time to time. Should make for some great footage. I'm going to put together a documentary for some of the projects they are working on. "Deep Sea Equipment specializes in the rental of the most current, state of the art marine equipment available today. With over 20 years of hands-on experience in project planning, equipment consulting, and logistics in the marine industry, the Owners and Operators of Deep Sea Equipment have the knowledge and expertise to cover a broad spectrum of marine sectors, including: Commercial, Environmental, Geophysical and Marine Surveying, Oceanographic, Military, Law Enforcement, Scientific and Offshore Oil and Gas." Pugwash Peace Exchange
This will be my second year shooting the Pugwash Peace Exchange. I head out July 11 and return late July 12th. Hopefully I'll be able to photograph more of Lieutenant General Roméo Dallaire (Retired). He is the author of Shake Hands with the Devil, his story of the UN mission in Rwanda during the genocide in 1994. This year I'm hoping to get some audio so I can put together a slide show. This post is also on my projects page. Wednesday, July 9, 2008Journalism 2.0
I downloaded a copy of Journalism 2.0 by Mark Briggs today. As a resource for what's new in journalism and where it is heading the book is priceless. From the web site: "Written for working journalists who are looking to make the necessary leap into the digital age, Journalism 2.0 introduces basic topics like Web 2.0, blogging, audio, video, online reporting and more. Each chapter contains screenshots and assignments so readers can quickly get their hands dirty with technology and be on their way to becoming more digitally literate." Mark has a blog titled Journalism 2.0 How to survive and thrive in the digital age. A copy of the book in pdf format can be found here on the Knight Citizen News Network.
Monday, July 7, 2008Hope for Sierra Leone
Sunday night I had the privilege of attending a lecture by Carolyn van Gurp about her work in Sierra Leone. Carolyn's blog is here and it delivers a message of hope for rebuilding the world's poorest country from the ashes of war. Much of her work is through the Centre for Development and Peace Education and Peaceful Schools International. She has about "3,000 photographs" so far and had to narrow it down to just a few for the lecture. Somewhere in there is a great documentary film.
