For as long as I can remember I’ve picked up worms from the sidewalk and put them in the grass. The worm has no idea where it is or how much danger it’s in, but I do.

There’s an old Buddhist proverb about hundreds of starfish stranded on a beach. An old man saw a young girl pick one up and throw them back into the sea before she moved on to the next. He asked her what difference she could make given there are so many?

She picked one up, looked at the old man, and replied, “It makes a difference to this one.”

Rehtaeh would do the same thing after a rain if she was out walking. Stop to pick up worms and gently place it in the grass.

Today marks nine years since her passing. If you want to do something today to remember her, let it be an act of kindness.

It makes a difference.
