This is about as close to a religious pilgrimage as I’ll ever get. As soon as we started planning our trip to Iceland, Dettifoss was at the top of my list of places to visit. In fact, it was the only ‘must see’ place we had on our list.

Getting there from the N1 took almost an hour. The 28km gravel road to the site wasn’t bad or dangerous, just really bumpy. Like a 28km reminder you’re at the mercy of whatever Iceland decides to do weather-wise. Fortunately, we had a beautiful day.

Dettifoss Falls is in the opening scene of Ridley Scott’s 2012 film – Prometheus. We had planned to see it with Rehtaeh in Halifax once it was showing. She was a true sci-fi fan.

We saw the trailer together and were looking forward to watching it on the big screen, but… it was not to be.
